If you’re new to model railways, we hope you’ll find the KATO Mini Diorama Circus a great way to create something of your own and see trains running through your diorama as part of the event. Do have a chat with other diorama makers at the show. We’re sure you’ll discover just how much fun this hobby can be!

If you’re a member of a model railway club, we believe the Mini Diorama Circus offers a great way to introduce newcomers to the hobby and encourage people to enjoy model railways in different ways.

Not everyone has space for a full-size layout, but anyone can make a diorama or two. Because mini dioramas are so small, building scenery and adding details can be done relatively quickly and inexpensively. This makes them ideal projects for anyone looking to develop their skills or simply try something new.

First step: buy a KATO mini diorama base.

There are two types of MINI DIORAMA BASE.

If you live in the US, click here.

The Mini Diorama Circus takes place at model railway exhibitions, where people bring along their own mini dioramas and easily connect them together using KATO UNITRACK to create one large layout. Small locomotives can then run through all the different scenes, making for a delightful sight!

Every diorama is different, so the theme is very much ‘anything goes’. You’ll see scenes inspired by places around the world, science fiction and fantasy, action films, cartoons and much more. Mini dioramas aren’t necessarily about recreating real railways. They’re about having fun, and the Circus takes that fun to a whole new level!

You can buy KATO Mini Diorama kits from model railway shops or online. Each kit includes all the parts needed to build the basic structure, including the railway track. Staff at your local model railway shop can recommend materials for creating realistic scenery, but you can also use everyday craft materials such as air-drying clay and cardboard. It’s entirely up to you!

How to Join the Mini Diorama Circus

1.GET YOUR MINI DIORAMA

You can buy a Mini Diorama Base from a model shop or online.
If you have a model railway shop near you, we recommend ordering one there. You might pick up some great ideas for your diorama from the staff in the shop, or even from other customers!
Your Mini Diorama Circus adventure might begin before you’ve even started building.

2.BUILD YOUR MINI DIORAMA

Use scenery materials and all sorts of things you can find around you to create a little world of your own on your Mini Diorama Base.Make it a world you love!

One important thing!

At Mini Diorama Circus events, we join everyone’s dioramas together and run model trains through them. It’s one of the most exciting moments of the Circus!
To make sure the trains can run safely, keep the ‘structure gauge’ in mind when building your diorama.”
The structure gauge is the clear space around the track that keeps passing trains from bumping into your scenery.
So make sure you leave enough space around the track as you build your little world!

3.FIND AN EVENT

You can find upcoming Mini Diorama Circus events at www.kato-mdc.co.uk.
If there’s one happening near you, come along and join the Circus!

4.HEAD TO THE EVENT!

Make sure you bring your Mini Diorama in a box to keep it safe on the journey.
Take care not to damage it on the way!

Please bring your Mini Diorama in its box. We’ll look after the empty box for you during the event.
Choose a box with plenty of room for your Mini Diorama, and don’t forget some padding to stop it rattling around on the journey.

5.JOIN THE CIRCUS!

Hand your Mini Diorama to the Circus staff, and they’ll connect it to everyone else’s dioramas.
Your creation will become part of the Circus ring at the KATO MDC stand until it’s time for you to go home.
We’ll look after your box at the stand, too.

6.HAVE YOUR DIORAMA PHOTOGRAPHED!

The Circus staff will take a photo of your Mini Diorama and add it to THE GREAT MINIATURE CIRCUS EXHIBITION on the official website.
That means anyone, anywhere can enjoy your creation, anytime!

7.TRY A WORKSHOP

Some events also have Mini Diorama workshops run by local model railway clubs.
It’s a great way to learn the basics, and the club members are experienced modellers with a wealth of knowledge to share.
Have a chat, ask questions, and enjoy meeting the people who know the hobby inside out!

8.SEND A MESSAGE

Take a look at everyone’s Mini Dioramas, and if you find one you really like, write a message card for its creator.
The Circus staff will make sure your card reaches them. A kind message can be a wonderful encouragement to keep creating.

(Message cards are available at the MDC stand.)

Before you go home, don’t forget to collect your Mini Diorama and pack it safely back in its box.
And you never know, the Circus staff might have a message card or two waiting for you!

The Circus Goes On...

Eight curved-track Mini Diorama Bases can be connected to make a complete Circus ring.
Why not recreate the Circus you saw at the event, right on your own table at home?
The Circus doesn’t have to end when you go home!

A KATO Mini Diorama is a tiny stage where you can squeeze in a
whole world from your imagination.

Perhaps it is only adults, already accustomed to making dioramas,
who worry about how a realistic, true-to-scale landscape could
possibly fit into such a tiny space.

A child’s imagination, however, can sometimes transcend reality itself.
It is often strange and wonderfully unexpected, effortlessly sweeping
aside those illusions we grown-ups call ‘common sense’ and ‘reality’.

And yes, it is rather like a circus: a place where people and animals dance side by side, where one surprise follows another amid merry rhythms and dazzling lights, and where, for a little while, you might just feel as though you could reach out and touch the moon.
